Reduce grid reliance and optimise irrigation costs

Phase one of Welgeluksalig’s renewable energy journey has been completed, delivering a solar-powered solution tailored to the farm’s irrigation needs. The system includes 119 roof-mounted panels (71.4 kWp) installed on a newly built shed to maximise space, paired with a 100kW hybrid inverter.

Due to the dry climate, the farm requires extended irrigation periods throughout the year. To take advantage of solar generation, one of the pumping systems was enlarged so that most irrigation can take place during the day, directly powered by solar energy. The farm originally had 125 kVA of grid capacity, but one of the Eskom supply points will now be decommissioned, leaving only a 50 kVA connection to the grid.

Phase two will involve adding battery storage, further reducing grid reliance and moving the farm closer to full energy independence.

This project reflects how strategic system design and phased implementation can deliver immediate savings while building a pathway toward complete renewable integration in agriculture.
